Edith got married when she was twenty to a man called Hubert Bland.

Edith는 20살에 Hubert Bland라는 남자와 결혼했다.

 

She remembered the things that she did as a child with her brothers and sisters and wrote in a way that was easy for young people to understand.

그는 어릴때 형제자매와 했던 일들을 기억해서 어린아이들이 이해하기 쉽게 썼다.

 

There are six children in our family, and then there is Father. Our mother is dead. Dora is the oldest, then there is Oswald-that's me. Then Dicky is next, then Alice and Noel, who were born at the same time. After them comes Horace Octavius, who is my youngest brother.

 

Albert fell in the hole and the ground fell on him.

Albert가 구멍으로 떨어지자 흙이 그위에 덮였다.

 

'Now we can be robbers,' said H.O. 'Dora says it's wrong to be robbers, but now she isn't here.

Dora가 삼촌댁으로 가자 막내가 하는 말인데 현실에서 어린애가 하는 생각같아서 재미있었다.

 

We hid carefully and then jumped out when the walker was close. It was only Albert from the house next to us.

우리는 걸어오는 사람을 놀래키려고 숨었다가 뛰어나왔다. 다만 그사람은 옆집 알버트였다. 

 

When children do things in books, it's always OK. It isn't the same for us. 

책에서 아이들이 하는 일들은 언제나 괜찮았아요. 하지만 우린 아니에요.

 

앞에 소개대로 아이의 시선에 맞춰 잘 작성된 이야기이다. 

어린 저자의 시선과 해석에 따라 표현되는 사건들과 그를 묘사하는 표현들도 보기 좋다. 

재미있게 읽었다.
